South Lodge Hotel Wedding Photography: Louise & Anthony Autumn Wedding near Horsham in West Sussex

My first bout of wedding photography at South Lodge Hotel in Horsham. Louise & Anthony had their wedding ceremony at Holy Trinity Church in Cuckfield, near Haywards Heath in West Sussex, but before that, we started with some wedding prep photos at their nearby family home. There were lots of lovely, personalised little wedding details, especially for the young flower girl and page boy and gifts for the bridesmaids and bride’s mother.

I love these candid moments, captured in black and white, as the mother of the bride opens her gift, Louise puts on her wedding dress with the help of the hair stylist, and the moment when the father of the bride sees the bride for the first time at the bottom fo the stairs.

Cuckfield Holy Trinity Church Wedding Ceremony

Arriving at the ceremony at Cuckfield’s Holy Trinity Church, we grabbed a quick photograph out of the rain, underneath one of the two lich gates. The church has been refurbished recently, the aisle is much more open now that they’re removed some of the trellis woodwork that separated the altar from the nave. This meant that these shots were really easy to get from the front of the church, without disturbing the ceremony.

The rain continued for pretty much all of the day, and after the ceremony, the wet weather was really settling in. But the texture of smooth paving slabs creating bit of reflection and the flatter lighting allows for some really smooth tones and surprisingly deep colours from the lush ground.

We got a couple of shots around the Holy Trinity Church grounds and under the lichgate near the main high street of Cuckfield. This lichgate is actually more like two lichgates, and I love the cosy smaller one without the gate, and because of the rain, it really was one of our only options for photography at that time!

South Lodge Hotel: West Sussex countryside weddings near Horsham

South Lodge Hotel Wedding Photography – We arrived at the West Sussex countryside hotel for the reception, and the autumnal colours were out in full force in the background for this shot at the South Lodge Hotel entrance. I set up a light behind the couple for a photo with the car and to add some light to some of the rain behind them. This helped balance some of the exposure between the undercover area of the hotel entrance and the gardens outside. We set up the group photographs in one of the grand hallways of the hotel, and grabbed a couple more portraits on the staircase, using the stone walls and candles on the walls for a backdrop.

I was biding my time at the reception to wait for the rain to get slightly heavier, and I was lucky that the wet weather really set in for the evening. A soft light behind Louise & Anthony highlighted all fo the individual rain drops, and the symmetry of this terrace staircase worked really well as a backdrop for this rainy wedding photograph.
