Equestrian Photography, West Sussex – Jess & Woody

I’ve tried out something new, some equestrian/pet photography in West Sussex with a close friend of mine, Jess and her horse, Woody. This equestrian shoot was more based on getting some great photographs of just Jess and Woody, and reminded me of a pet photo shoot, something I’ve yet to shoot myself yet! It was great to try new things and combine a lot of my wedding photography and landscape photography knowledge to this shoot in the stunning Ardingly Reservoir near Haywards Heath in the West Sussex countryside.

We scheduled the shoot to catch the evening light and get some great shots at golden hour. We were lucky with the weather, and the woodland location made for some great bokeh with a shallow depth of field and the reflected light in the surrounding fields gave a great atmosphere to the photographs.

I bought my polariser along to try out a couple of shots, enriching the colours of the sky and trees, and my 24-35mm Sigma ART lens for some photographs of Jess and Woody, and the surrounding landscape.

Shooting horse photography of Jess & Woody riding together was very difficult and this took a few runs to get the right balance of shutter speed and aperture, along with placement of the subject in the frame.

We headed down to Ardingly reservoir to complete our equestrian photography adventure, and get some shots of the two of them reflected in the calm waters of the lake.

I used the polariser again for the above shot, which really helped bring out the colour in the sky.

Thanks to Jess & Woody for being such great models, even though Woody mostly just did his own thing!
