Preview: Daniel & Alice's wedding in the South Downs at Pangdean Barn, Pyecombe, Brighton
A few shots from yesterday's wedding at Pangdean Barn in Pyecombe, just outside Brighton. The barn is right in the heart of the South Downs and there's a small chalk track that we drove up onto in the evening to get the shot above at Golden Hour.
The ceremony took place under an apple tree that is just coming into season. The apples add a nice feature for photographic composition and an additional splash of colour.
The venue's location in the South Downs National Park means that there are fields and hills in all directions and this country lane is a firm favourite of mine for shooting portraits.
This is the track that we took my little Ford Fiesta up - it's a bit rocky for walking. At Golden Hour, the time when the sun is low in the sky and produces these golden colours, is a great time for wedding portraits and the best time for landscape photography too. Using my knowledge of landscapes we shot a couple of photos on this hill; this walking photo is looking South, back towards Pangdean Barn.
There were loads of small flies and flying ants hovering in the evening light. They speckle this photo as small blobs of light to give it a magical atmosphere.
Finally, I used two flashes at almost full power to balance the setting sun and the exposure on Dan & Alice. A full CTO lighting gel on one flash helped balance the colours. Using flash allowed me to keep the colour and exposure in the sky and to use the light from the sun as a key light for some drama in this photo and the one at the top of this post.
